Okay, reading more into your comment on that thread, Tish, I see what you were getting at. More discussion would be helpful on this subject of citizen journalists who are not "political bloggers," especially women.

The needs may vary, and I hope that if Lydon wants to follow up, he will do so with Boston-area people.

Meanwhile, it's sparked some other interesting discussions about what the New England region could benefit from as a whole.

This site has some interesting thought-provoking material along those lines:

http://www.newenglandfutures.org/

I'd like to see a newsy-commentary-folksy blog that looks at a range of issues that impact our future, with a nod to how variegated New England really is.

I mentioned it here:

http://medianation.blogspot.com/2006/07/toward-new-england-common.html

and meredith followed. at least two of us are raising the concern. Dan did not address them himself--but that's not a surprise. Political blogging seems to eclipse anything that *isn't* political blogging...

Overall an excellent disucssion Lydon's idea. Heart's in the right place, but not sure if what he wants to do is needed. We might be served by another kind of effort that will be more inclusive of groups outside of the Boston area *and* inclusive of blogs that are not totally politically focused.

Tish, I've read that comment thread at Media Nation multiple times now and I can't for the life of me figure out where anyone mentioned citizen journalists who aren't political, or women, political, citizen jouranlists, or not.

Point me to a link!

thanks

Sorry I missed you two yesterday! I've been up to my eyeballs in follow-ups and projects that I haven't had the chance to come over here (should have though)

I've been following some of the disucssion about Chris Lydon's suggestion over at Dan Kennedy's blog. Some important concerns have been raised regarding inclusion of bloggers who do citizen journalism and aren't political (many women bloggers aren't political, but are vital)

I got in touch with Bill Densmore about what I've observed (who's possibly left out) and we're going to talk about a way to bring people a little closer together. If y'all have any input, and want me to pass it along to Bill, let me know.

Heather, I actually left the New England Common thing shortly after you did. I thought I might catch up with you, but ended up running into some people I knew in the Blue Wall. My brief commentary on the conference is here.
