Thanks for posting this, Tish. I read with interest Grotke and LePage’s take on The Reformer:
I’ve heard The Reformer has had internal issues and that good reporters have left because of quarrels with management. Newspapers should respond to community blogs like iBrattleboro by working to retain good reporters, and heightening the quality of their content. But too many newspapers seem to view their reporters as easily replaceable.

That’s probably the case with alot of newspapers, Andrew. I think, too, that some newspapers might want to look at who’s blogging and see if there’s anyone they might want to work with from the rank and file. Most folks who are good writers usually have some kind of writing background–even if it isn’t direcly journalism–and might do quite well with an editor who’s interested in grooming them. This way, a local paper might keep, and retain, a person who will stay with the community, not have huge ambitions to work in the big-time. That’s kind of an old-fashioned (I mean *really* old-fashioned) way of doing things, but might work.
