Thanks for posting this, Tish. I read with interest Grotke and LePage’s take on The Reformer:

They have a high turnover rate for reporters. Their “senior” reporters are fresh out of college with no experience and little understand of the town or what happened here even a year ago. Really. It’s a pretty sad little paper, is losing revenue and respect, but it IS the town paper so people feel obligated to buy it. A new community paper is trying to start up, too, now.

I’ve heard The Reformer has had internal issues and that good reporters have left because of quarrels with management. Newspapers should respond to community blogs like iBrattleboro by working to retain good reporters, and heightening the quality of their content. But too many newspapers seem to view their reporters as easily replaceable.

That’s probably the case with alot of newspapers, Andrew. I think, too, that some newspapers might want to look at who’s blogging and see if there’s anyone they might want to work with from the rank and file. Most folks who are good writers usually have some kind of writing background–even if it isn’t direcly journalism–and might do quite well with an editor who’s interested in grooming them. This way, a local paper might keep, and retain, a person who will stay with the community, not have huge ambitions to work in the big-time. That’s kind of an old-fashioned (I mean *really* old-fashioned) way of doing things, but might work.

[…] The past few days, I’ve gotten notices of new items in the comments of Citizen Media on my RSS reader, both under the iBrattleboro interview post, both having something to do with Paris Hilton, that when I popped over to the site, weren’t there. Are we getting robo comments? […]
